2010 Events, Event Reports & Photos

April 9^th - Texas.

Marcus was 5 years old and confined to a wheelchair all his short life. He caught a cold, which ended up with pneumonia, and he lost his battle. Marcus was a special education/special needs child. His school is holding a memorial service and are planting a memorial tree for Marcus. One of the many people who knew him states; “He was very special to us and we believe that a butterfly release would symbolize his life here with us has now moved on”

Jodi Hopper from Wish upon a Butterfly has generously donated butterflies to this Wings of Hope event. The event was beautiful and the butterflies were great. They were such a suprise to his mom. One even sat on her finger for the whole service. Thank you so much for all of your help.

May 8^th - Mineral Wells, Texas.

Wings of Hope has received a request for butterflies for a Memorial Service for 144 Hospice patients who have passed on within the last 14 months.

This event is in Mineral Wells, Texas on May 8 at 11 A.M.

Theresa Chesmore (ButterflyWay.com) and Lynn Zawackis (ButterflyFaces.com) offered to donate butterflies for this event, dependent on the pupae emerging in time this early in the season. In view of the uncertainty, the requestor did not respond to this offer. In any event, thank you Theresa and Lynn.

May 21^st - Release for Hunter - Rochester, New York.
(Revised release date: June 3^rd.)

A Wings of Hope event in Rochester, New York.

Hunter was a 1st grade student who was shot & killed by his father on 2-12-10 in a murder-suicide. His death deeply affected his classmates and the community. As a Memorial to Hunter, His classmates are planting a flowering tree in front of the school. They wish to incorporate a Monarch butterfly release, as Hunter took great pleasure in the unit on the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly. They feel it would help the students to know that his spirit still soars with them. They have had the students involved with the memorial which they feel is essential to the healing of their grief.

June 13^th - Shelton Butterfly Project

On November 20th, 2009 Viviana Rose Cavalli was killed in a car accident which also claimed the life of her boyfriend, and injured her best friend. The community in Shelton, which is a tight knit, and incredibly supportive community came together to support the families of the children involved in the crash.

Wings of Hope donated butterflies to a butterfly release to raise funds to support a Scholarship Fund established in memory of Viviana Rose Cavalli and others who lost their lives in drunk driving accidents. Several hundred more butterflies were sold to raise funds for the two scholarships.

June 26^th - Whittier, California

I received a very last minute request for Wings of Hope for a funeral on June 26, of a special needs child who developed a rare form of cancer (and ultimately several other serious disorders as a complication of the disease and its treatment). She fought for several years and finally succumbed to the cancer. This family is in Whittier, California; Theresa Chesmore has offered in the past to donate butterflies if we had any events. It was perfect timing.

August 13 - Ohio: Rockin' and Walking for Hope

The Noble County Suicide Coalition held an event called Rockin' and Walking for Hope on Friday, August 13, in Ohio. They hoped to release butterflies near an established butterfly garden at the elementary school.

September 11^th(9-11) - Massachusetts.

I have a request for butterflies for 9-11 in Massachusetts . Hospice care in the Berkshires hosts an annual Remembrance Walk to celebrate, honor and remember loved ones. It is a free community event. This year the walk is on the ninth anniversary of 9-11 so they are hoping to make the event more special with a butterfly release. They gather at Ashuwilliticook Trail which is between two reservoirs. After a brief ceremony, they offer participants the opportunity to walk the trail for 1.5 miles then return on the same path. It is a beautiful, peaceful and spiritual event aided by the beauty of the area.

September 19^th - Camp Quality

I have received a request for Wings of Hope which covers 7 locations on 9-19-10.

Camp Quality is a non-profit organization which supports children with cancer and their families. They plan to have a butterfly release in 7 of their locations in the United States in association with a community event to build awareness of childhood cancer.

The 7 locations are:

Akron, Ohio
Kansas City, Missouri
Joplin, Missouri
St. Joseph, Missouri
Louisville, Kentucky
Chicago (Lansing), Illinois
Wichita, Kansas

Coordinator Wings of Hope

Jodi Hopper and Alicia Baylor had offered to supply 1-2 dozen butterflies to the multiple events on September 19. However due to time constraints, the requesting party has decided to purchase butterflies from a breeder.

September 26^th - Taltree Arboretum & Gardens, Indiana.

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is located in Indiana . It is a 360 acre reserve of formal gardens, woodlands, wetlands, and prairies (www.taltree.org). A portion of Taltree’s Native Plant Garden was designated as a certified Monarch Waystation. They have sponsored a Butterfly Interest Group (BIG).

They would like to do a Monarch release for the 40^th anniversary of the Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County. Taltree will provide BIG volunteers who will conduct the release and distribute information about Taltree and the BIG as well as explain the Monarch lifecycle and habitat. The volunteers will also hand out packets of milkweed seeds provided by Taltree to encourage the propagation of milkweed plants as a habitat for Monarchs . The VNA will also be creating a butterfly garden for their new Grief Center .
