Wings of Hope

April 21, 2012: Joy to Life Foundation
Montgomery, AL
Event Summary: Walk of Life is a 5K Walk/Run in downtown Montgomery, Al, to help raise funds for free mammograms for women under 50 years of age and are medically under served. Our foundation, the Joy to Life Foundation (www.joytolife.org) is 10 years old and has become the most successful breast cancer screening program in the State of Alabama. We now provide free mammogram and awareness programs in 29 counties in Alabama.
Walk of Life has grown over the past 10 years from 300 participants to over 5000 at this year’s event. April 2012 we would like to provide to all our survivors and their families a "butterfly release".
We would like to have a butterfly release during a ceremony honoring all our breast cancer survivors, honoring all those individuals that are "fighting the fight” against breast and the remembering all those women/men that have lost their battle with breast cancer. We think a butterfly release would be a perfect addition to our Breast Cancer Survivor Picture we take each year. We also think that it would be very symbolic of HOPE that is so important for the family members and Survivors.
Completed Events in 2011
April 15, 2011: Crime Victims Fund
April 10 - 15 is National Crime Victims' Rights Week. Our organization, the Crime Victims Fund, is a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization that provides crime victims and their families with immediate needs through emergency financial assistance during their time of crisis. The W Hotel in Downtown San Diego has donated their rooftop restaurant for our commemorative event. We would love to do a butterfly release as a symbol of restoration of hope, faith and dignity. We are an all volunteer organization and on a shoestring budget. Our community has never had a butterfly release in honor of crime victims and we respectfully request participation in your Wings of Hope program.
This release involved another group raising the larvae and combining those butterflies with some donated butterflies. The group rejuvenated a butterfly garden and Wings of Hope sent them over 100 special seed packs, and brochures. Wings of Hope is flying high! Thanks to everyone that helps.

May 22, 2011: Dallas, Texas: Miracle Players
Miracle Players is non-profit organization that provides theatre camps and musical theatre performances to hospitalized children. All donations to Miracle Players fund pediatric cancer research and help to offset the medical expenses of pediatric cancer patients.
On May 22, 2011 we will be holding our first annual Miracle Players Gala. The Gala will be for pediatric cancer families in the North Texas area as well as Miracle Players supporters. We plan to have a butterfly release to symbolize the spirit of children fighting cancer and the hope for a cure for all pediatric cancers in the near future. The butterflies will be released by pediatric cancer patients to honor them for their courage and strength.
Since Miracle Players is dedicated to using the highest percentage of donations possible for our stated cause, and avoiding excessive spending on fundraising and events, a donation of butterflies from Wings of Hope would be incredibly helpful and so appreciated.
Connie Hodsdon of Flutterby Gardens of Manatee, Inc. generously donated 250 Painted Lady butterflies. David Folk of Folk's Butterfly Farm kindly offered to cover FedEx shipping costs.

Christine,
Oh, they were absolutely wondrous!! Such a joy! My apologies for not writing to you sooner - life has been so hectic with the Preeclampsia Awareness concert and the walk. Here are some photos of the children with the butterflies at the concert and the cradles, which stand in memory of the many thousands of babies lost to this terrible disease each year. The butterflies visited the cradles, which was so moving. I will write more and also send some film very soon.
Warmly,
Susannah

Subject: Thank you!
Good Morning Christine,
The butterfly release was PERFECT!!!! Such a wonderful event! Thank you so much for all of your help. I will send pictures once we have them uploaded. We had almost 150 people here and everyone was either honoring a cancer survivor or memorializing a loved one who has passed from the disease. The stories that were shared were so incredibly touching. I now have a wall of paper butterflies hanging behind my desk and it looks beautiful, I feel like I am surrounded by angels. When the butterflies were released and flying around and landing on people’s shoulders it was as if we could feel the presence of the people we have lost… just an amazing moment and something we hope to do annually.
Thank you!
Sarah
